The Kia Soul has a funky exterior design with a spacious and functional interior. It fits in the subcompact SUV market but drives like a hatchback. For 2021, Kia gave the Soul a rear occupant alert and revised the suspensions for the GT-Line and the X-Line models. Also, for 2021, the lower trims gained a remote start feature. Here's a closer look at the latest Kia Soul.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Soul is the LX, which comes with 16-inch steel wheels. The X-Line adds side body cladding, 18-inch wheels, and roof rails, while the S comes with 16-inch alloy wheels. Step up to the GT-Line for red cosmetic trim elements, a sunroof, a unique front bumper, and side sills, or choose the EX for heated side exterior mirrors, a sunroof, and upgrades in the cabin. At the top of the 2021 Soul lineup, the Turbo comes with LED headlights and LED fog lights.
Engine (Power)
The base powertrain for the Soul is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine that puts out 147 horsepower. It works with front-wheel drive and comes with a six-speed manual transmission. Kia's intelligent variable transmission is available for the LX and standard in the rest of the trims. If you want more power, the Turbo gets a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This powertrain develops 201 horsepower.
Performance
The base engine has plenty of power to propel the small Soul. The larger engine in the Turbo offers quicker acceleration, and it provides better fuel economy with 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. This subcompact crossover with the turbo is fun to drive, and its small size and tight turning radius make it ideal for urban settings. It's also a comfortable cruiser when you take it on the highway and has a suspension that keeps it stable around tight corners.
Interior
There's room for five in the Soul with spacious seating and plenty of headroom in both rows. In the back, the cargo area has over 24 cubic feet of storage space and 62.1 cubic feet when you fold down the rear seats. Cloth upholstery comes standard in the LX, along with a manually adjustable driver's seat. Moving up through the trims adds a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rear center armrest. The Turbo has the most equipment and comes with a heated steering wheel and simulated leather upholstery.
Technology features start with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a USB port, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, and a 7-inch touch screen. The EX adds a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen, the UVO infotainment system with integrated navigation, and it has a wireless charging pad. The top-level Turbo upgrades to a premium Harman Kardon stereo system.
Safety Features
Every Soul has a rearview camera, and all but the base LX have advanced safety features. These include forward-collision warning with automatic braking in emergencies, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and a drowsy driver monitor. The Turbo adds pedestrian detection to the forward-collision warning system.
