The Kia Sorento fits in the midsize crossover market with three rows of seats and room for up to seven. The 2021 Sorento received a complete redesign. It offers a selection of powertrains, has Kia's slick infotainment system, and high-quality materials in the cabin. Kia updated the exterior with a new, boxier style, and it rides on a new platform that provides more room in the cabin.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Sorento LX comes with 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, and heated side door mirrors. A step up to the S gets you 18-inch wheels, gloss black exterior trim elements, and roof rails, while the EX adds LED fog lights. Bumping up again to the SX adds 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and LED taillights, and the high-end SX Prestige comes with upgrades in the cabin and more safety features. The Prestige X-Line upgrades the exterior look with dark silver trim elements and unique bumpers.
Engine (Power)
The base engine for the Sorento is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine that puts out 191 horsepower. The EX bumps up the power with a 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder that generates 281 horsepower, and this larger engine works with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Kia introduced a hybrid powertrain for 2021 with a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor.
Performance
Both engines have plenty of power for the Sorento, but the turbo will get you up to speed more quickly, and it's faster off the line. The steering system is responsive, and the suspension eats up road imperfections to help provide a smooth ride. When equipped, it can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Interior
The Sorento's three rows provide seating for up to seven, and if you opt for the second-row captain's chairs, there's room for six. Cloth upholstery comes standard with SynTex simulated leather in the S, which also gains heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Choose the SX for a power-adjustable passenger seat, or bump up to the Prestige, which will get you leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
Standard technology in the Sorento starts with an 8-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 4.2-inch digital instrument display for the driver. A wireless charging pad comes in the EX, and the SX has a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it comes with integrated navigation. The Prestige has an upgraded 12-speaker Bose stereo system, along with the tech features from the SX.
Safety Features
Every Sorento comes with a forward-collision warning system with automatic braking, a driver attention warning system, and lane departure mitigation. Every trim also has a rearview camera and comes with low-speed lane-keeping assist. Kia adds a blind-spot monitor to the S, along with rear cross-traffic alert. The EX gets adaptive cruise control and adds bicyclist detection and pedestrian detection to the forward collision mitigation system. Bumping up to the Prestige adds a 360-degree camera and a blind-spot camera with a live feed.
