Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level LX comes with 15-inch steel wheels, intermittent windshield wipers, and it has automatic headlights. The S adds remote keyless entry, and if you add the Technology Package, it comes with LED headlights, 15-inch alloy wheels, and chrome door handles. The sedan body style comes in both trims, and if you want the hatchback, it comes only in the S.
Engine (Power)
You'll find a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine under the hood of both the sedan and hatchback Rio. It generates 120 horsepower and gets 112 pound-feet of torque. This engine works with a continuously variable automatic transmission, and all Rio's come with front-wheel drive.
Performance
Like other subcompact cars, the Rio is the perfect vehicle for urban driving. It will easily slip into tight parking spots and maneuvers around parking garages with no problem. The engine has plenty of power for the small car, will quickly propel it up to highway speed, and it is a fuel-efficient option for a gas-powered vehicle. You can expect to get up to 33 mpg when driving in the city and up to 41 mpg when driving on the highway.
Interior
Whether you have the sedan or the hatchback, you can fit five people in the Rio. The hatchback has 17.4 cubic feet of cargo space in the back, and the sedan has 13.7 cubic feet of storage. The seats in the Rio are comfortable even on long rides, there is plenty of headroom and legroom in the front, and the rear seats in this small car have enough space for adults to sit comfortably. Standard features in the LX include a tilt steering wheel column, cloth upholstery, and a manually adjustable driver's seat. The S adds split-folding rear seats, a front center armrest, and adjustable rear headrests. An 8-inch touch screen comes standard for the 2021 Rio, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base trim also has a USB port and a four-speaker stereo system. The S adds another USB port for the rear seat, and adding the Technology Package gets you a 4.2-inch driver information display and an upgraded stereo system.
Safety Features
All 2021 Rio models have a rearview camera, a full suite of air bags, and traction and stability control. The Technology Package adds some advanced driver safety aids such as forward collision warning, automatic braking in emergencies, and lane-keep assist. This package also adds a lane-departure warning system, a drowsy driver monitor, and a rear occupant alert feature that alerts the driver if they have left something in the back seat, such as a child or a pet.
